Science and Plants for Schools (SAPS) in association with Rocket Learning have developed a new resource, complete with CD-ROM, to help teachers raise ethical issues related to science with their students. It is suitable for use in schools and colleges in the UK and links closely to the curriculum.
The resource consists of two activities for use in Biology, Science or PSE classes with secondary school students. It has been designed to encourage students to consider some of the ethical issues which have arisen due to recent advances in genetics and associated technologies. One resource looks at issues relating to Human Genetics and the Human Genome Project, and the other considers issues surrounding the GM plant debate. If these activities were used in Biology or Science classes they would complement the study of genes and genetics; if they were used in PSE classes they could be linked to general discussions of moral and ethical issues facing society today. The age range for this resource is 14-18 year old.
These activities have been successfully piloted by teachers throughout the UK and were recently presented to participants at an HMIe conference.
Both resources are ready to use and come complete with all materials required for classroom use, including a teacher guide and supporting information for students.
